Enhancements During the MAGic 11.0 Development Cycle
The following items were resolved during the MAGic 11.0 development cycle and public beta releases.
MAGic
- When running MAGic together with JAWS moving word by word with the JAWS cursor is now reliable.
- There is a new script function GetMagicSerialNumber, that script developers using MAGic Pro Scripting Edition can use to label there scripts for specific users.
- Scroll bars are no longer displayed when running MAGic in 40-minute mode.
- The Focus Enhancement should now display the selected program in the Windows XP Start Menu, even if the All Programs list expands to multiple columns.
- FSReader demo can now open the latest training books for JAWS or MAGic without crashing.
- In Office 2007, MAGic speaks the buttons in the Ribbon, but will not speak the tooltip unless you actually point with the mouse. Previously MAGic spoke both button name and tooltip even when navigating via the keyboard, which resulted in too much information being spoken.
- MAGic now honors SAPI 5 volume settings correctly.
- Fixed the problem of an error message on some Windows XP systems that reported the video driver was made for an earlier version of Windows.
- The default color for Focus Enhancement is now saddle brown.
- If you select the uninstall option, Remove Shared Components, when removing MAGic from your computer, all components in the ffdshow folder and the Freedom Scientific talking installer are now removed.
- The Windows Vista blue screen no longer appears when shutting down MAGic.
- MAGic correctly tracks when navigating between multiple icons on the Windows Vista desktop.
- Changes made in the Global Voices Adjustment dialog box are now saved and apply to all applications used with MAGic.
- MAGic now magnifies using the latest video drivers for ATI and NVIDIA video cards.
- With magnification turned on, mouse movements and selections no longer stick and now move smoothly around the screen.
- At higher magnification levels, such as 26X, 28X, 30X, 33X, 35X, and 36X, there is no longer visual corruption when using magnified Split View (MAGic Key+NUMPAD SLASH).
- The Lens View function (MAGic Key+NUMPAD SLASH twice quickly) no longer shows visual corruption at higher magnification levels.
- When use an applications Find function, the forward search (F3) and the previous search (SHIFT+F3) keystrokes operate correctly with MAGic.
- Switching magnification from 2x to 1.9x or from 1x to 1.1x no longer produces video corruption.
- If Focus Enhancement is enabled, opening the MAGic Context menu no longer causes the enhancement to be disabled.
- In the Global and Individual Voices dialog boxes, pressing PAGE UP increases values on the sliders and pressing PAGE DOWN decreases the value. This matches the behavior in JAWS.
- In Speech menu, Highlight Options dialog box, the Highlight Style options work correctly for all applications.
- The Focus Enhancement is no longer displayed while reading a document. Only the reading highlight is displayed.
- The border surrounding the Overlay view is now displayed correctly.
- MAGic no longer crashes when adjusting the volume if a SAPI 5 synthesizer is used for the Primary voice profile.
- The MAGic 11.0 talking installer no longer warns of a premature expiration. The talking installer will expire when the MAGic beta expires.
- Focus Enhancement now surrounds the entire control, even when higher magnification levels are used.
- When navigating by Line with Eloquence, it no longer mispronounces text such as "1 Married" incorrectly like "March onest rried".
- The typing cursor now blinks at a normal rate when running MAGic and JAWS together. Previously, the blinking was too fast.
- Higher magnification levels, such as 21x, 28x, and 30x, no longer cut off the right edge of the screen.
- Moving the mouse across the right edge of the screen no longer leaves traces of the mouse pointer.
- Selecting a custom SAPI 5 voice for Say All or Alternate Say All now keeps the custom SAPI voice when you save the voice profile.
- Changing magnification level for the MAGic context menu will now remember the correct level the next time you use keystrokes to change the level.
- Check boxes for Minimize on Startup and Run MAGic from System Tray can now be selected together or independent of each other.
- Mouse Enhancement with pointer color set to either Invert Brightness or Invert Color now displays the inverted pointer correctly. Previously it was showing just an outline of the pointer.
- The resize tool now positions and resizes the Overlay correctly on any portion of the screen of your choice.
- MAGic maintains speech when reading the Help menu for Microsoft Calculator.
- MAGic announces the highlighted item when using the UP or DOWN ARROW keys in the edit boxes in Font dialog of WordPad and Notepad.
- The name of the active script set for Office applications is announced using the keystroke, ALT+WINDOWS+INSERT+Q.
- Spanish language MAGic users will now hear the correct pronunciation of "equal", "igual" in Calculator.
- SHIFT+F1 help is available for the Restore Defaults and the MAGic Key buttons in the Keyboard Manager dialog box.
- In the Keyboard Manager dialog box, the Set Typing Echo action is available in the All Default category and the Verbosity category.
- The Cursor Enhancements functionality is available as you move the mouse.
- MAGic correctly speaks the decimal point when reading a decimal number.
Microsoft Excel
- In Microsoft Excel, bringing up the Adjust MAGic Options dialog box (MAGic Key+O) no longer produces a message about an unknown function.
- MAGic announces Custom dialog titles.
- When characters d or u are entered in edit combo boxes, MAGic continues the search as requested without repeating the entered text.
- MAGic reads the cell's content in Excel by pressing ALT+CTRL+NUMPAD 5.
- MAGic correctly speaks and spells misspelled words and speaks provided suggestions when performing a spell check.
- MAGic no longer announces "blank" as you navigate through the combo box items in the Custom Auto Filter dialog box.
- Left and right character navigation is fixed for edit combo boxes.
- MAGic now announces the correct information when moving from top to bottom in a cell with comments.
Microsoft Internet Explorer
- After searching for text in HTML windows using the MAGic Find dialog, you can now use F3 to find the next occurrence or SHIFT+F3 to find the previous one.
- MAGic no longer announces an Unknown Function Frame Loaded Event when opening Web sites using Internet Explorer 7.
- When Focus Enhancement is enabled, but speech is disabled, the rectangle now correctly tracks movement when new Web pages are loaded using Internet Explorer.
- In Microsoft Internet Explorer, pressing TAB to navigate items on the page will remove the document reading highlight.
- The Say All command (INSERT+DOWN ARROW or MAGic Key+SPACEBAR) now reads correctly from the mouse position on a Web page.
- During a Say All, highlighting works correctly while reading a Web page.
Microsoft Office
- The Focus Enhancement now correctly surrounds the controls in Microsoft Office dialog boxes.
- In Office 2007, you can now navigate the Office Button menu with the mouse without experiencing lockups.
- The function to toggle tracking on or off (MAGic Key+R) now works while in Internet Explorer and Adobe Reader.
- Tracking now works in the Favorites menu and Favorites center of Internet Explorer 7.
- MAGic now tracks the User Account Control dialog boxes when first displayed and when pressing TAB to navigate through the buttons in these dialog boxes.
- MAGic now tracks the highlighted item in the context menus for all Office 2007 applications.
- MAGic now correctly tracks all items in the ribbons for Word 2007, Excel 2007, and Outlook 2007.
- MAGic now tracks the ribbon in the Outlook 2007 e-mail editor, as well as the menu bar in the main Outlook window.
- MAGic is tracking menu bars and toolbars in Office 2003 applications.
- In Windows Help, MAGic reads the correct page contents when using the keystrokes to navigate backwards or forward through pages.
Microsoft Outlook/Outlook Express/Windows Mail
- MAGic now has the option to read messages automatically in Outlook 2007 when you open them
- Editing keystrokes, such as ENTER and SHIFT+ARROW Keys, now work correctly when composing an e-mail message. Previously, if you temporarily moved focus away from the composition area, and then back again, these keystrokes would not work.
- MAGic no longer announces the message "Unknown function SetGlobals" when composing an e-mail message or navigating through the various sections of an e-mail message.
- MAGic reads the menu and button names while navigating the menu bar of the New Mail Message window in Outlook 2003.
- MAGic announces the tab page names correctly when using CTRL+TAB in the Rules and Alerts dialog in Outlook 2003.
- MAGic announces the Reminder time edit combo boxes present in Options dialog, Appointment dialog, and Meeting dialog.
- While running Word as the editor for Outlook, you can now press SHIFT+TAB to return to the Outlook headers.
- The text reading highlight works correctly when rereading the same e-mail message using Say All.
Microsoft Word
- MAGic now announces asterisks instead of the recently typed password when you enter text into the password field of a password-protected file. This only occurs when using Word with Windows Vista.
- When you change MAGic options using the Adjust MAGic Options dialog box (MAGic Key+O) while running Word, MAGic saves the updated options. Previously, MAGic would save the settings, but would also announce the message "Application settings could not be saved." This message is no longer heard.
- In Microsoft Word 2007, MAGic Options (MAGic Key+O) can now be toggled on or off.
- In Word, bringing up the Adjust MAGic Options dialog box (MAGic Key+O) no longer produces a message about an unknown function.
- When you hold down and release the BACKSPACE, DELETE, or any of the ARROW keys, the cursor now stops instead of repeating.
- In Word 2007, MAGic enables users to view posted comments.
- Spanish language MAGic users are able to access previous (CTRL+PAGE UP) and next (CTRL+PAGE DOWN) item commands while using Word.
- MAGic reads the edit controls as well as the second and third lines of the address when using Envelopes and Labels subcommand, which appears under the Letters and Mailings command of the Tools menu in Word.
- MAGic announces the Custom Mark edit box, located in the Footnote and Endnote dialog.
- MAGic correctly responds to the Move to start of row keystroke (ALT+CTRL+SHIFT+LEFT ARROW) while using a Word document with a table.
- While using Word with MAGic, you will now hear the message voice rather than the PC Cursor voice when messages appear.
- In Word 2007, MAGic enables users to view posted comments.
- Spanish language MAGic users are able to access previous (CTRL+PAGE UP) and next (CTRL+PAGE DOWN) item commands while using Word.

Microsoft WordPad
- Issues involving the selection of text using the mouse or the SHIFT+ARROW Keys have been resolved.
Mozilla Firefox
- In Mozilla Firefox, MAGic Mouse Echo no longer misreports buttons as menus.
Sun Java
- MAGic now correctly reads the menu bar in JAVA applications.
- Java Applets are now correctly displayed while MAGic is running.
Note: For this to work, you need to install JAVA Runtime Environment Version 6 as well as the latest JAVA Access Bridge.
Windows Explorer
- The Focus Enhancements feature now works correctly when navigating through a list of files in Windows Explorer.
Windows Vista
- The Focus Enhancement now works correctly in the default Start Menu of Windows Vista.
- Smoothing now works on the Aero mouse pointer scheme from Windows Vista.
- Fixed memory leak when displaying the Start menu in Windows Vista.
- Fixed a video lockup that occurred on some Windows Vista systems when clicking on Start menu items with the mouse.
- MAGic now reads the CTRL+ALT+DELETE prompt when Secure Log On is enabled on a Windows Vista computer.
- If an invalid password is entered when logging on to Windows Vista, MAGic now reads the static text for the Invalid Password dialog box including the error message.
- The Locator function now correctly returns to a mouse pointer when turned on and off while running Windows Vista.
- The Volume Mixer application in Windows Vista now lists MAGic displaying the icon for MAGic instead of the one for JAWS.
- In Windows Vista, MAGic now tracks the Desktop icons when running with JAWS 9.0.
- In Windows Vista, MAGic can now track both columns of the Start menu.
- In Windows Vista, MAGic now speaks security dialog boxes for downloaded files regardless of the mouse pointer position. Previously, MAGic would speak the dialog only if the mouse pointer was inside that dialog box.
- The option to Disable Screen Saver (File menu, Preferences dialog) now works in Windows Vista.
- In Windows Vista, MAGic now honors the setting for Mouse Enhancements when set to display enhancements only when the mouse is moving, or when the mouse is not moving, even while using Internet Explorer with Protected Mode enabled.
- When you shut down or restart Windows Vista, MAGic now exits without leaving traces of the magnified screen over the unmagnified image.
- In Windows Vista, you can now manipulate the Locator using the keyboard.
- In Windows Vista, buttons for Sleep, Lock this computer & Shutdown submenu are now tracked correctly by MAGic.
- In Windows Vista, the MAGic Startup Wizard will not generate UAC confirmation prompts unless you choose to change startup options or set the startup hotkey.
